The European Union has announced that it will temporarily suspend its tariff increase on American whiskey in an effort to reboot transatlantic relations.

The US government has announced that the existing 25% tariffs will remain on single malt Scotch for the foreseeable future.

American whiskey exports to EU have decreased by a third since the bloc imposed a 25% retaliatory tariff in June 2018.

US whiskey imports to the UK have risen 50% over the past decade according to the Wine and Spirits Trade Association.

The Distilled Spirits Council (Discus), which represents the spirits industry in the US, revealed its 2012 findings in New York this week.

Diageo and Suntory have held talks about bidding $10 billion for American drinks giant, Beam, according to reports in today’s Sunday Telegraph (December 9).
