Brands Report: Bitters

23 January, 2018

Angostura’s wide distribution puts it in a class of its own, says Hamish Smith

Angostura claims its Aromatic Bitters is the most widely distributed bar product in the world. No surprise, then, that it dominates our first cocktail bitters list. Two-thirds of our sample said it was their number one and 81% put it in their top two bitters brands. Peychaud’s, which has long played a supporting role, was only the top bitters in 3% of bars, but was the second choice in 38% of those polled and a top-three choice in two-thirds.

Beyond these classics, the field opens up. The Bitter Truth, with its ever-expanding range, can meet almost all needs and was the top choice in 15% of bars, not to mention a top-three option in 46%.

Fee Brothers and Bob’s were in a third tier, a healthy distance from the chasing pack of Bitterman’s, Regan’s, Boker’s, Dr Adam Elmegirab’s and Scrappy.

Methodology

The results of this report are the culmination of a questionnaire of 106 bars around the world, each cherry-picked to take part based on their performance in global bar awards. We aim to find out not only which brands sell best but also what’s trending. These two data sets give us an insight into the brands that are doing the most volume and the brands that are hot right now.
