The International Organisation of Vine and Wine predicted in late 2017, that this year would be a “historically low” year for global wine production. The OIV has reported that the volumes produced will drop to its lowest level for more than 50 years with Italy, France and Spain being particularly effected due to climactic changes.
Cramele Recas, the largest Romanian winery, invested £5m in its production in 2017 and employed two new winemakers to drive the production of its new ranges, which will be launched at Prowein this March.
Bulk wine is an important market to Romanian brands due to its influence in UK supermarkets, and with the increasing popularity of French and Italian wines in China, Romania has the potential to fill the void for European consumers.
Speaking to DI, Cramele Recas founder Philip Cox, said: “Romanian wines have an actively terrible reputation in Germany and the UK. Romanian wine is often associated with being cheap, but there is a big opportunity for us to change this preconception.
“It will be an exciting year for us, especially now that there is a hole in the market for us to exploit with the global shortage of wine.”
