The news follows talks between Trump and Indian prime minister Narendra Modi which took place at the White House.
The tariffs will see basic customs duty on bourbon of 50%, with an additional levy of 50%, bringing the total to 100%.
Vinod Giri, director general at Brewers Association of India, told Reuters: “As India seeks to integrate into global economy, there is an increasing acknowledgment that the import duties in India on alcohol are high and need be reduced in line with other duties.”
The current tarrifs on the imports of other liquors, which are taxed at 150%, will see no change.
