Mixology celebrates German-speaking bar talent

Bartender Arnd H Heissen and Cologne bar, Spirits, took the top prizes at The Mixology Bar Awards 2014 last night.

The annual ceremony, now in its seventh year, celebrates the best of the German-speaking bar world and is run by Mixology magazine.

Heissen, of the Curtain Club at the Ritz-Carlton (Berlin) and last year’s Host of the Year, took the awards’ top individual prize for 2014, Mixologist of the Year.

Spirits won German Bar of the Year, Dino’s American Bar was Austrian Bar of the Year, while Swiss Bar of the Year went to Onyx Bar. 

The other awards were as follows:

Newcomer of the Year: Reinhard Pohorec, The Sign (Vienna)

Host of the Year: Thomas Altenberger, Lebensstern (Berlin) 

Spirit of the Year: Tanqueray Malacca

Hotel Bar of the Year:  Bar DaCaio (Hamburg)

Bar Team of the Year: Spirits (Cologne)

Bar Menu of the Year: Gamsei (Munich)

Mixology City Award 2014: Munich

Bartender’s Choice: Angostura Bitters

The awards ceremony was hosted by Philip Duff and German TV presenter Hadnet Tesfai and saw around 500 guests attending, including the likes of Charles Schumann, Alfred Cointreau and global rum ambassador Ian Burrell.

The awards are voted for by Mixology’s ‘Jury’ of drinks trade experts.
