Latest Macallan Lalique decanter unveiled

The Macallan and French crystal maker, Lalique, unveiled their latest special decanter in the Six Pillars Collection at the TFWA exhibition in Cannes today (October 22).

‘The Spiritual Home’ in the fifth in the series. The handmade decanter contains 62-year-old single malt scotch whisky from three sherry seasoned barrels, two from US oak and one from Spanish There are only 400 decanters and each will retail for US$25,000.

David Cox, director of fine and are whiskies for The Macallan, described the whisky as “liquid history”. He said this was the last of the older style of whisky which contains elements of peat from originally drying the barley.

The first decanter in 2005 celebrated the oak maturation casks. Number two in 2007 highlighted the natural colour of The Macallan while 2009 was about the ‘finest cut’. The 2011 decanter celebrated what Cox calls the “curiously small stills from which the rich, heavy, concentrated style that is the foundation of The Macallan”.

The latest celebrates The Macallan’s base, Easter Elchies house, the manor house above the river Spey built by Captain John Grant in 1700.
