Concha y Toro excels at climate change awards

Viña Concha y Toro, Chile’s leading wine producer, was named as one of the top three organisations contributing to managing climate change at the annual Chilean ‘Leading Companies in Climate Change Management Awards’. 

The company also received a special mention as the ‘Leader in Carbon Footprint measurement’.

South America’s preminent wine maker’s placement in the gold category, says this cements its position as a world leader in climate change management.

The awards are organised by Fundacion Chile, a non-profit organisation, founded in part by the Chilean government, which seeks to develop business and industry through technological innovation.

As well as publishing its first 'Sustainability Strategy', which outlines its environmental initiatives and illustrates its commitment to climate change, Concha y Toro says it also celebrated a carbon footprint reduction of 28% compared to the previous year

Viña Concha y Toro claims to be one of the first wineries in Chile to measure its carbon footprint and has been monitoring this since 2007. it says it was also the first in the world to measure its water footprint; monitoring the total volume of fresh water used during wine production.

The company says it is working to replace the use of fossil fuels with renewable energy and introducing solar thermal panels in buildings and vineyards. The company's Forest Areas Conservation Programme has also seen 3,272 ha of native forest protected, with 87% of this area undergoing biodiversity inventories.
