New Zealand premium wine sales soar in the UK

25 July, 2014

New Zealand wine has become the number two country of origin in the UK market for wine sold over £7, according to the latest Nielsen data (MAT June 21, 2014).

New Zealand now sells 18% of all wines sold in this premium price segment, having overtaken Australia and now sits behind France, says New Zealand Winegrowers.

The statistics also show New Zealand’s average price per bottle has increased to £7.34 from £6.79 – an 8.1% increase (Nielsen).

New Zealand Winegrowers Europe marketing manager, Chris Stroud, said: “New Zealand is now selling almost one in every five bottles in the UK above £7 market. This is outstanding; especially considering New Zealand only produces less than one per cent of the world’s wine.

“The UK is one of the most sophisticated wine markets in the world, due to the choice available, and it’s terrific that consumers are continuing to choose New Zealand Wine,” said Stroud.

New Zealand wine exports reached a record high earlier in the year and now stand at US$1.33 billion, up 10% for the year end June 2014. Wine is currently New Zealand's seventh largest goods export. Wine exports have increased by $1 billion in the last 10 years.
