US wine region receives Chinese investment

15 May, 2017

The US wine region of Temecula has been heavily invested in by Chinese businessmen due to its close proximity to LA, Orange County and San Diego.

Entrepreneur and US resident David Liu, who earned his fortune exporting scrap metal to China, has purchased 700 acres of land in Riverside County with the help of Chinese investors.

Liu, who spoke to the LA Times, said: “Here, we have 20m people living at least a two-hour drive away. And the quality of the wine is much better than before.”

Liu’s company Standard Portfolios is building a wine resort and residential community named Twelve Oaks which is due to open in 2019.

Twelve Oaks is the largest of five projects backed by Chinese investors in southern California's primary wine-producing region, which consists of 40 wineries.
