The company says this is aimed at those who wish to experience the original taste of the spirit as it was in the 17th Century.
The new malt spirit, especially packaged in 100 limited edition clay jars containing the new expression and signed by Lucas Bols master distiller, Piet van Leijenhorst, was launched at the Lucas Bols Distillery in Amsterdam on May 10.
Lucas Bols CEO Huub van Doorne told Drinks International: “Pioneering is at the heart of Bols and dates back to the creation of Bols Genever in 1664. By launching the most original of genevers, we take genever back to before the birth of cocktails giving bartenders and consumers an original taste of this exciting spirit. This is for the connoisseur and the people in the know.”

Created by van Leijenhorst, Bols Genever 100% Malt Spirit (47% abv) is said to be genever in its purest form. Distilled from long-fermented corn, rye and wheat with juniper berries, it delivers smoothness and complexity on the palate. From grainy grassy notes to sweet honey and fruity tones of green apple and fresh citrus.
Van Leijenhorst, Lucas Bols master distiller, told DI: “As master distiller for more than 30 years, this is one of my favourite genever expressions as it truly showcases our unique malt spirit recipe. Bols Genever 100% Malt Spirit has a huge complexity and richness, for those who like to taste real genever in its most original and purest form. This special edition explains why all Bols Genevers are so unique in taste.”
The company said “by introducing Bols Genever 100% Malt Spirit, we are giving bartenders worldwide the possibility to re-create some of the earliest drinks ever made. With centuries of distilling experience passed on from master distiller to master distiller we are the authority in producing the most authentic genevers.”
Bols Genever 100% Malt Spirit will be generally available from October.
