Raconteur's Allan rises to Broker’s Challenge

02 August, 2011

Mikey Allan of The Raconteur, has triumphed at Broker’s Gin Cocktail Challenge in Edinburgh, beating off an all-Scottish field of bartenders.

The Edinburgh-based event, which moved from The Raconteur to Bond No 9 this year, saw bartenders competing to create the most complementary cocktail to Broker’s Gin.

Judging the event was the brand’s co-founder and ambassador Andy Dawson, Chris Flint of host bar Bond No 9 and Euan Thompson, director of Stella Brands, Broker’s Gin’s distributor.

Allan’s creation, The Old Alliance, won first prize (see recipe below), with Tom Walker of Bramble coming second and Gordon Purnell of Voodoo Rooms third.

According to the brand, its English-made gin is distilled five times in a copper pot still, using wheat spirit and ten botanicals.

The Old Alliance

45ml Broker's Gin (47% abv)

1 Japanese bar spoon of Dundee orange marmalade

1 Perthshire raspberry

2ml Pastis

2 dashes of orange bitters (plus 1 raspberry to garnish)

Combine ingredients in a cobbler shaker. Fill with ice cubes and shake hard. Double strain into a chilled vintage cocktail glass. Garnish with a raspberry on a cocktail stick with mini Broker’s bowler hat attached.
