Alliance Global buys Whyte & Mackay

09 May, 2014

The Philippines-based Alliance Global Group drinks group which owns the Emperador brand, has bought Whyte & Mackay US$726 million, including debt, according to unconfirmed reports.

The scotch whisky business which includes Dalmore and Tamnavulin brands and distilleries is part of the now Diageo-controlled Indian drinks company United Spirits Ltd.

The offer is believed to have been recommended by USL’s board but is subject to regulatory approvals in India and the UK.

The Alliance Global group is said to be controlled by billionaire Andrew Tan. Emperador is a sub-premium brandy label. It is estimated to have grown more than three-fold since 2010.

At approximately 32 million cases, it is said now to be the third-largest spirit label by volume worldwide after Jinro soju and Ruang Khao Thai spirit.

Whyte & Mackay will add a substantial supply of scotch to the business. Tan said to have stated that the move is in keeping with Emperador’s plans to expand its product portfolio. Itwill give the group access to Whyte & Mackay’s distribution network of more than 50 countries.
