Brands Report 2015: Tonic

08 January, 2015

No brand dominates Brands Report like Fever-Tree does.

In 37% of our bars, it is the top selling tonic and more dominant than Tanqueray, Havana Club, Johnnie Walker or Hennessy in their respective categories.

Projecting forward from the trending list, it’s fair to assume that even at bars not offering the brand as their house pour, customers are asking for it. 52% of bars said Fever-Tree is the trending tonic.

The brand is now in more than 50 markets and recently turned to the stock markets for investment to expedite further global expansion.

Tim Warrillow, co-owner of Fever-Tree, told DI on the day of the stock market listing that the US was the next big push as the G&T craze has yet to explode there in the way it has in Europe.

In the high-end on-trade at least, we can expect Fever-Tree to continue to dominate the Brands Report in years to come.

Schweppes may have the carbonation of Fever-Tree but it has lost some of its sparkle, certainly since the days it monopolised the on-trade. Its market position and established distribution networks mean it remains the top seller in 23% of bars polled and trending in eight of the 100.

Marrying affordability and brand-recognition, Schweppes is still one of the on-trade’s go-toproducts.

Fentimans, like its British competitor Fever-Tree, has soared as a category leader of the premium tonic water wave. It was the top pour in 11% of polled bars.

HOW WE DID IT

We spoke to the World’s 50 Best Bars for this poll but in order to have a broader set of results we widened the net to include responses from a total of 100 of the top bars in the world - as voted for by our World's 50 Best Bars Academy.

We asked bar owners and head bartenders from these 100 top bars to name the Best Selling and Top Trending brands behind their bars. For more information about our methodology see here.

Day by day we will take you through the overall Best Selling and Top Trending spirits, and into the categories - from tequila, gin, vodka, rum, liqueurs, Scotch, World Whiskies, Brandy, aperitifs and digestifs, champagne, beer, water and tonic water to the best brands for cocktails.
